Asana's New AI Teammate

Asana is launching an AI-powered tool called AI teammates that can advise workers on priorities, create workflows, and complete tasks to boost productivity. Using Asana’s Work Graph data, the AI can assign tasks, evaluate steps, and gather missing details. Currently in beta, it’s already being used for creating tailored advertising, translating assets, and standardizing workflows. Asana emphasizes keeping humans in the loop to align AI recommendations with company values and minimize errors.

Why it matters: Asana's AI teammates can significantly enhance workplace productivity by intelligently prioritizing and automating tasks while ensuring alignment with company values.

Music Clips by Stability AI

Stability AI has released Stable Audio Open, an open-source text-to-audio model that generates high-quality sounds, songs, and audio samples. Trained on over 486,000 royalty-free recordings, it can create 47-second audio clips and is ideal for drum beats, instrument riffs, and ambient sounds. Users can edit existing songs and apply styles from one track to another, with the option to fine-tune the model using personal audio data. For longer tracks and commercial use, users can subscribe to 'Stable Audio 2.0,' which offers up to three-minute, high-quality music generation.

Why it matters: Stability AI's Stable Audio Open revolutionizes audio creation by allowing users to generate and customize high-quality sounds and music clips, enhancing creative possibilities in music production.

AI Workers Call for More Oversight and Protections

Thirteen current and former employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind have signed an open letter, titled “A Right to Warn about Advanced Artificial Intelligence,” calling for better safety oversight and whistleblower protections in the AI industry. They highlight that AI companies hold significant information on the risks and limitations of their models but have weak obligations to share this information publicly. The letter urges the end of “disparagement” agreements, the creation of anonymous safety reporting processes, and protections for whistleblowers.

Why it matters: This appeal underscores the critical need for transparency and accountability in the rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence.

Microsoft Recalls ‘Recall’

Microsoft is making changes to its new feature, Recall, after it was labeled a “security disaster” last week. Recall captures and stores screenshots every few seconds, creating a searchable “photographic memory.” Security experts warned that this feature, enabled by default on Copilot+ PCs, could let hackers steal all user data. In response, Microsoft will now disable Recall by default, secure screenshots with facial recognition or fingerprint scans, and encrypt all data.

Why it matters: While Microsoft addresses security concerns, there are doubts about Recall's practicality and whether a more effective Windows search feature would be better.

Amazon AI Inspects Your Orders

Amazon is launching Project PI (“Private Investigator”), an AI tool that uses computer vision to flag defective, damaged, or incorrect products before they are shipped. Products are scanned through an imaging tunnel, and the AI checks for errors. If a defect is found, it investigates similar issues to identify the root cause, and employees decide if the item can be resold at a discount. Additionally, Amazon is developing a multimodal large language model to compare customer reviews with Project PI images to understand customer dissatisfaction.

Why it matters: Project PI aims to enhance shipment quality and accuracy, reducing returns and their associated carbon emissions.

Microsoft AI to Predict Natural Disasters

Microsoft has introduced Aurora, an AI weather forecast model (similar to what Google recently launched) designed to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of weather predictions. Aurora was trained on over 1 million hours of diverse weather and climate simulations and atmospheric data, giving it a deep understanding of atmospheric dynamics. This allows it to predict weather scenarios, especially extreme events, with high accuracy, even in data-sparse regions like developing countries and polar areas.

Why it matters: Aurora aims to improve our ability to predict and mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events, benefiting agriculture, transportation, and disaster preparedness amidst escalating climate change.

Google Bans Unsafe AI Content

Google has introduced new rules for AI app developers on Google Play to reduce inappropriate and prohibited content. Developers must prevent the generation of sexual and violent content, include in-app reporting mechanisms, and rigorously test their AI tools for safety and privacy. These rules apply to apps that generate AI content, like chatbots and image generators, but not to AI productivity tools or apps that host AI content.

Why it matters: This guidance aims to curb nonconsensual deep-fake content and enhance safety in the Google Play Store.

Researchers Use AI to Predict Specialized Cancer Treatment Outcomes

Scientists at the National Institutes of Health are using AI to help doctors determine which cancer treatments will be most effective for individual patients. The study demonstrates how AI can predict the success of immunotherapy drugs, which typically only benefit about 20% of patients. The model uses data from simple blood tests, considering factors like age, cancer type, and previous treatments, to make its predictions. Available as an open-source platform, it also forecasts patient survival times, though more extensive studies are needed for verification.

Why it matters: This AI-driven approach could significantly personalize cancer treatment, improving outcomes and reducing unnecessary procedures.

Apple Brings ChatGPT to Its Apps, Including Siri

At WWDC 2024, Apple announced the integration of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, into Siri and other first-party apps across its operating systems. This will allow users to enhance their experience with features like meal suggestions using garden ingredients, content creation, and document-related queries. These capabilities will be available on iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia for free, without requiring a ChatGPT or OpenAI account. The integration uses OpenAI's GPT-4o model, with premium features available for ChatGPT subscribers.

Why it matters: This collaboration aims to enhance user experiences across Apple devices while maintaining strong privacy protections.

Elon Musk Threatens to Ban Apple Devices Over ChatGPT Integration

Elon Musk has threatened to ban iPhones from his companies following Apple's WWDC 2024 announcement of integrating ChatGPT into Siri and other first-party apps. Musk voiced concerns on social media platform X, arguing that this integration could compromise user privacy, despite assurances from Apple and OpenAI that data is only shared with ChatGPT after explicit user permission. Musk believes this setup still poses privacy risks and advocates for keeping AI capabilities confined to dedicated apps rather than integrated into the operating system.

Why it matters: Musk's opposition highlights the ongoing debate over balancing AI innovation with user privacy, challenging Apple's claims of safeguarding user data.

WhatsApp Adds AI Tools for Businesses

WhatsApp has introduced new AI tools to help businesses enhance sales and customer service. These include tools to answer common questions, create ads for Instagram and Facebook, and follow up on abandoned carts or offer discounts.

Why it matters: These enhancements aim to make WhatsApp a more powerful tool for businesses, improving customer interaction and boosting sales capabilities.
